Greta Lodge

A historic backcountry hut on the northern shores of Lake Ohau, in Ruataniwha Conservation Park, Canterbury.

Overview

Greta Lodge is a historic backcountry hut located on the northern shores of Lake Ohau, leased and maintained by the North Otago Branch of the New Zealand Deerstalkers’ Association (NZDA). Originally built in the 1930s as a cookhouse for road workers during the Great Depression, this charming hut offers a unique glimpse into New Zealand's past while providing shelter for hunters, trampers, and outdoor enthusiasts.

Adjacent to the DOC Ben Ohau Hunting Block, it serves as an ideal base for exploring the surrounding tussock valleys and ridge lines.

Design & Construction

Constructed in the 1930s as part of a workers' camp for building the Old Glen Lyon Road and its stone walls. Leased by the NZDA North Otago Branch from the Twizel Community Board, the hut is undergoing upgrades to meet modern safety standards while preserving its historic character.

Volunteers are leading the effort to install a composting toilet (funded by Meridian), an enclosed fireplace, and general maintenance. The project emphasizes sustainability and heritage conservation.
